Webmaster Note: This is the first story ever posted at blackraptor, in May 1998.

Disclaimer: This story is a work of fan fiction based on CBS's The Magnificent Seven. It is not intended to infringe on the copyrights held by CBS, MGM, Trilogy, or any other PTB.

Notes: This story takes place a few weeks after the group initially forms, during the gap between "One Day Out West" and "Working Girls." I know of only one element of broadcast canon which it contradicts--if these events had occurred, J.D. would not have fallen for the scam Maude pulled on him in "Witness" -- but I have taken liberties with the series timeline by assuming there is at least a two-month gap between those two episodes. I believe this is reasonable, based on observable changes in the group dynamics, but I doubt it is what the producers intended.

In case anyone wants a "face" for my special guest villain, Ethan Mandrell, I see him being played by James Horan. (Grayson in the Highlander episode "Band of Brothers.")

I'd like to thank Nancy for providing tons of useful information on period and folk medicine. Thanks, too, to Heather for priming my Muse as needed with suggestions and prose; to Jo for copy-editing; and to Nancy, Jess and Sue for reassuring me that it's readable.
