Crossover: American Outlaws

"JD, you can’t win, just give up," the young girl challenges as she and the young peacekeeper sit, playing checkers outside the jail.

"No, I...I can move," he tells her absently, staring intently at the board.

"Where?" the tracker asks sarcastically, observing the game.

JD gives his fellow peacekeeper a look, but then turns to glance down the street as he hears hoofbeats coming in fast.

"What in the...?" the young sheriff asks, slowly standing from the table.

Vin and Samantha both look up at the same time to see five riders coming into town.

"Just a bunch of cowboys JD. No need to get your feathers ruffled," Samantha says, jokingly, as she turns to head inside the jail.

"Samantha Dunnison," one of the ‘cowboys’ calls.

JD looks from the man, to Vin, then to Samantha, who slowly begins to turn around, with a smile on her face.

"Well, well, you’re a long way from home," she says, smiling, as she rushes over to the now standing cowboy, wrapping her arms around him.

JD raises an eyebrow and looks to Vin in confusion. Vin returns the raised eyebrow then both look back to the newcomers.

Samantha hugs a few of the other riders.

"What are you doing way out here?" the girl asks, placing her hands on her hips.

"Had to visit our favorite girl," the black haired man responds, with a slight grin.

"Zee know you’re here?" Samantha questions.

"Of course. You think I’d leave home without telling her?" the man answers, shaking his head a little.

"Aw, come on Sam, you know he’s scared of her," one of the other men teases.

"She says to tell you 'hello'," another man says, quietly.

"Well, do send her a 'hello' from me Frank," she says, with a smile to the man.

"Uh Sam," JD interrupts.

Samantha turns back to the two men she had recently been having a conversation with, knowing they were curious about the strangers.

"Oh, guys, I’d like you to meet my friends, Vin and JD," she introduces. "And boys, I’d like you to meet, Frank, Bob, Cole, Tom, and...," she hesitates, "Jesse." She motions to the black haired man, who has now placed a hand on her shoulder.

Vin nods to them as a few of them nod their heads in greeting.

The black haired man extends his hand to JD.

"Any friend of Sam’s is a friend of ours," Jesse says, as JD shakes his hand.

JD doesn’t respond, just stares at the man, with a questioning look on his face.

"Well, now," Samantha says, to ease the silence, "How about I show you boys the best place to get a drink around here."

"That sounds good," Frank says.

Samantha turns and heads for the saloon, the five men following her.

"I knew it!" JD exclaims to Vin.

Vin looks at him in question.

"That guy, with Sam, that’s Jesse James," he tells the tracker, looking at a wanted poster.

"Whoa now kid, just cause his name’s Jesse, doesn’t mean..." Vin starts, but stops as JD shoves the poster in front of him.

"Well, okay, and he looks a little like him, but how would Sam know Jesse James? I mean...unless," Vin says, looking up to JD.

JD shrugs his shoulders.

"Sam did say once that she fell in love, and she did seem awfully happy to seem him," the young sheriff states, "And to think I’m gonna have to arrest him."

"Know who are they?" Chris Larabee asks Buck and Ezra while looking over to the table where Samantha is sitting.

The two peacekeepers turn around and look over to where the girl is sitting with five men. They watch as Samantha deals a round of cards smiling and talking as she does so.

"They just came into town today," Buck responds.

"Obviously acquaintances of hers," Ezra says, looking back to his game of solitaire.

"I’ve been watching ‘em closely pard," Buck states, "They don’t look to be trouble."

Chris nods his head to his friend, sits back and keeps a watchful eye.

"Now, tell me the truth. What are you doing here?" Samantha asks her opponents.

"Well actually, we’re here to do what we’re good at," Jesse smirks.

"Jesse James, you are not robbing this bank," Samantha whispers, glaring at him.

"Don’t worry Sam, we weren’t planning on it," Tom responds, with a grin. "We’ve come to bring you some news."

"What is it?" she asks, looking around at the faces.

"Well, Zee…she’s going to have a baby," Jesse says, staring at his cards.

"Congratulations Jesse," the girl responds, with a big smile.

"Thanks, but I wanted to know…well…" he hesitates.

"He wants to know if he can name it after you," Bob says, getting to the point, which promptly gets him hit upside the head by Cole.

Samantha places a hand on Jesse’s shoulder, "Oh, of course you can. I'd be honored if you'd do that. Tell Zee I’m so happy for her."

Jesse nods his head at her and places his hand on top of hers, giving it a quick squeeze.

"So, how long are you going to be in town?" she asks, looking to Cole.

"Probably just today, maybe tonight," Cole replies.

"Um, excuse me, my dear," Ezra interrupts, walking up to the table.

Samantha moves her hand away from Jesse to turn and look at Ezra, as do the other men.

"Oh, Ezra," she says, a little surprised, "I’d like you to meet my friends, Jesse, Cole, Bob, Frank, and Tom. Boys, this is Ezra Standish."

Ezra nods his head to the men and turns back to look at Samantha.

"Boy, you sure are a fancy dressed man," Bob blurts out.

Ezra looks at the man named Bob and says, "I’ll take that as a compliment."

"What do you need Ezra?" Samantha questions, changing the subject.

"Well, I was wondering if your friends here were going to need a place to stay. I could recommend a fine place," he drawls, lying through his teeth, hoping the men were going to be on their way and soon.

"No but thanks, we’ll probably be moving on this evenin’," Frank responds, with a smile.

"Alright then, gentlemen, nice to meet all of you. Enjoy the rest of your stay," Ezra tips his head to them and then says, "Samantha."

He begins to turn away from the table when he hears a question.

"Sam, why don’t you invite your boyfriend to join us?" Cole questions out loud.

"He’s not my...!"

"She’s not my...!"

Both Samantha and Ezra exclaim at the same time, pointing to each other, but stop abruptly as JD and Vin walk in the saloon and over to their table. Chris and Buck begin to watch as the scene unfolds and Josiah and Nathan make their way into the saloon.

"I’m sorry, but Mr. James, you’re under arrest," JD states, holding his head high.

Jesse looks from JD to Samantha.

"Your friend’s the sheriff?" he questions.

Samantha nods her head, "Now JD, you can’t arrest him."

"Sam, I don’t care if he is your boyfriend," JD states.

Cole and Frank spew their recent sips of beer on the table with laughs as Ezra tilts his head in confusion and the other four peacekeepers give each other questioning looks.

"He’s a notorious outlaw," the young man continues. "Now we can do this the easy way or the hard way," he says, looking at Jesse.

Jesse stands up to face JD, looking down at the young sheriff, since there is quite a height difference.

Samantha stands up quickly coming between them, pushing Jesse back a little bit with her hands.

"Now hold on," she tells them both.

She then looks around; the rest of Jesse’s gang has stood up behind him, while the rest of the seven have maneuvered over behind JD.

"There’s no need for a fight here, just let me explain," she says, turning to face JD and the rest of the peacekeepers. "First of all, Jesse’s far from being my boyfriend. I ran into him about a year or so ago and it just so happened we were headed in the same direction. A girl traveling alone is dangerous, so having them around seemed like a safe bet. That and the fact I had accidentally helped them evade their pursuers caused us to become friends and that's all there was, then we parted ways."

"But not before you helped us with that stage coach robbery," Jesse states, with a smirk.

The seven peacekeepers look at Samantha in surprise.

"Now, hold on," Samantha says, turning to look at Jesse and then back to the seven. "That man on the stage stole my money in a card game so I just simply got it back. It was, in my book justifiable," she tells them, but the seven men still look at Jesse as a hungry wolf looks at a rabbit. "And," she adds quickly, "if it weren’t for Jesse I wouldn’t be here. He saved my life."

"I’d almost forgot about that," Cole says, with a smile.

"So how did that come about?" Chris questions.

"Well, see, right after I ran into Jesse, I found myself in an awkward situation with a sore card game loser who was out to seek reprisal. The man was going to kill me, that is, until Jesse stepped in," the girl states.

"That true?" Chris questions Jesse, who gives him a nod of agreement.

"But he’s a wanted man Sam," JD protests.

"So is Vin, but that doesn’t change the way I feel. I love these guys just like I love you all, so I’m asking you…no I’m begging you, please let them leave in peace," she says, pleadingly.

JD looks around at his fellow peacekeepers.

"Well," Josiah says, at he looks at Jesse, "I’ve never seen you before in my life."

Samantha gives a smile, as Chris steps forward.

"We’ll let you leave and pretend you never rode into town, but you have to go now," the leader states.

+ + + + + + +

Samantha looks over her shoulder at the seven men standing on the boardwalk. Then turning, she hugs Frank and Cole and watches them swing into their saddles. She moves to hug Jesse goodbye.

"Protective aren’t they?" he asks, looking over her shoulder as she hugs him.

"Yeah, they are," she responds.

"Good, and by the way," he replies, as she pulls from the hug, "I like him."

"What? Who?" she questions, confusion written on her face.

"That Ezra fellow. He seems right for you," he replies, with a smile.

"Ezra? We’re not…you didn’t even get to talk to him…besides we’re not…" she stutters a little.

"Of course you’re not and he’s not even remotely interested in you, is he?" Jesse questions, with a sly grin.

"Not at all," she responds, in a huff.

"Well, let's see how he reacts to this," Jesse says, then bends Samantha down backwards in a kiss.

Cole and the others laugh, knowing exactly what Jesse is doing.

Six peacekeepers watch with stunned expressions, unlike Ezra who drops his jaw along with his cards.

Samantha stands up and takes a step back, giving out a smile.

"Send Zee my regards," she says, still smiling as Jesse swings up on his horse.

"Yes ma’am," Jesse replies, tipping his hat.

"And stay out of trouble," she tells them all.

"We’ll try to," Cole says with a grin.

Samantha waves once, and then watches as the group rides away.

She then turns back to look at the shocked men.

"Is there a problem here?" she questions.

"No," Nathan shakes his head.

"Well," she says, stepping up on the boardwalk between all of them. "See? Some outlaws aren’t so bad after all, now are they?"

She smiles to the men and then places her hands on her hips with a sly grin.

"And they're not bad kissers either," she states, playfully. "Zee’s a lucky girl."

With that she steps into the saloon, as Buck claps a hand on Ezra’s shoulder.

"Breathe Ezra, breathe," he says, jokingly.

Ezra closes his mouth, takes a deep breath and stares intently at nothing as the rest of the men begin to snicker and turn to go their own way.

Samantha watches Ezra from inside the saloon doors and smiles brightly, thinking to herself.

Thank you Jesse James.
